Size and Price a BYOC Cluster

When you create a BYOC cluster, size it from your workload requirements instead of translating them into Redpanda tier terminology. Describe your workload, such as throughput and partitions, and Redpanda recommends machine configurations with price estimates. Workload-based sizing is the recommended way to size a cluster.

After reading this page, you will be able to:

  • Describe your workload to get recommended machine configurations with price estimates

  • Compare sizing options by RPU rate, machine type, and broker count

Workload-based sizing is available only to organizations on usage-based billing. If you don’t see the Size your workload section when you create a BYOC cluster, contact your Redpanda account team. Other organizations select a usage tier instead.

How sizing works

You can size a cluster in two ways:

  • Describe your workload. Provide your partition count and your ingress and egress throughput, and optionally a latency target, producer count, and consumer count. Redpanda resolves the compute capacity your workload needs and recommends machine configurations that provide it.

  • Specify capacity directly. Provide a rate of Redpanda Processing Units (RPUs), from 1 to 384. One RPU represents two vCPUs of broker compute. Redpanda resolves the machine configurations that deliver that capacity. Use this mode only if you already know the capacity you need; describing your workload is the recommended path.

Both ways return a ranked list of viable machine configurations. Each option shows its machine type, broker count, and RPU rate. The Estimated costs panel shows the hourly and monthly estimate for the selected configuration, covering Redpanda compute and SQL engine license costs.

Price estimates use your organization’s rate card.

Size a cluster in the Cloud UI

  1. Log in to Redpanda Cloud.

  2. On the Clusters page, click Create cluster, then click Create for BYOC.

  3. Enter a cluster name, then select the resource group, provider, region, and availability. If your organization uses usage-based billing, the Size your workload section appears in place of the Tier selector.

  4. Under Size your workload, choose how to size the cluster:

    • On the Standard tab, enter the Number of Partitions, Ingress, and Egress for your workload. Optionally, expand Additional options to set a Latency target, Producer count, and Consumer count.

    • On the Advanced tab, enter an RPU Rate if you already know the capacity you need.

  5. Under Recommended configuration, review the machine configuration that Redpanda recommends and its calculated RPU. To use a different configuration, select one of the alternatives from the list.

  6. Review Estimated costs, which shows the estimated hourly and monthly cost of the selected configuration. The estimate covers Redpanda compute and SQL engine license costs. Networking, storage license, and cloud infrastructure costs are not included.

  7. Continue with the create flow for your cloud provider. See AWS, GCP, or Azure.
